Integrated Digital Systems/ScanAmerica, Inc. (IDSS) has implemented document security and control processes at its Manassas Solutions Center to comply with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) patient records handling requirements.HIPAA regulations apply to any person or organization that handles medical records in any format or media. The regulations provide strict guidelines for legally and effectively handling medical records to protect patient information. Although the law has been on the books since 1996, deadlines for compliance were in late 2003. Failure to adhere to the letter of the law will result in stiff penalties and possible criminal charges.
